Certified Auto Mechanics
The modern automobile bears little resemblance to its predecessors from the past. There is a need for trained mechanics and Certified Auto Mechanics are the answer to that need.
In the golden days of the past, the auto mechanic was a fellow with greasy fingernails and stained overalls that could perform miracles with just a couple of simple wrenches. Our teenage sons were tearing down their jalopies and putting them back together as a way to spend a Saturday afternoon. When our vehicles needed work we could not do ourselves, we took them to a dealership or local repair shop with little concern. Certified auto mechanics were something we did not really think much about.

Today, this has changed. The modern automobile is a computer controlled electronic marvel of sophisticated engineering. The teenage sons no longer can easily tear them apart, and the greasy mechanic has been largely replaced by the “Auto Tech.” It is very simple. Caring for automobiles has moved into a new era and what is required is skill and knowledge. This skill and knowledge needs to be constantly updated as well.
Several programs have been instituted to provide this training to mechanics. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence is a good example. Commonly known as ASE, this organization offers training, testing, and certification services for mechanics. Their stated mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair through the Certification of auto repair professionals. It is easy to see how far we have come from the greasy fingernails approach to auto repair.

Other good certification programs are conducted by the Auto makers. The Mr. Goodwrench program from General Motors is a good example. These are usually associated with dealership mechanical shops. Yet, with the advanced technical and engineering complexity of the modern automobile, this type of specialization is usually necessary.
It is really the customer that is the key to the Certification programs. If the customers actively seek certified mechanics for their repair and maintenance needs, it insures that the mechanics will seek certifications to remain competitive. It is a system that truly benefits everyone involved. The mechanic gains skill and needed training and the consumer receives quality work. We may all have a bit of nostalgia for the good old days, but we also have become spoiled by the luxury and performance of the modern automobile. It is a trade off that we have made and it is unlikely that the future will bring less complex vehicles. Certified auto mechanics are the ones who will take care of the repair and maintenance needs of the next generation of vehicles.
